Rope Access Render Repairs Case Study

Located in the heart of Glasgow City Centre, a well known Hotel had been suffering from significant water ingress into many rooms on the west side of the building.

The cause for this water ingress was identified as being due to render failure on the building exterior. The original render had depleted over the years due to a combination of UV damage and the regular freezing/thawing and rain penetration of the relentless Scottish weather.

The hotel contacted Abseiling Services looking for a solution to their problem. The cost for erecting scaffolding was very high due to the difficult access nature of the problem. Rope Access however was the ideal solution. Quick to erect and providing easy access to a large areas, rope access would allow our technicians easy access to the areas that required building maintenance to complete the necessary works.

Our solution to the problem was to use a specialised industrial grade paint formed of a primer coat and 2 topcoats. Not only would this rectify the problem but it would also improve the exterior aesthetic of the building.

Prior to painting we had to seal cracks using a specialised sealant to ensure water could not enter through. Using a three man rope access team, we successfully completed the render repairs within the quoted price which was far cheaper than the quotes that the hotel had received from other building maintenance contractors using scaffolding.

The project was completed with minimal issues with the only delay being due to heavy Autumn rain conditions in Glasgow.

With the work completed, the Hotel is very happy with the finished results that have not only fixed the problem but also improved the buildings aesthetic. They were equally impressed with the service and communication that they received from the Abseiling Services team. So much so that we have already begun work on additional building maintenance work for the client using our rope access services.

Rope Access Services has many advantages over traditionally used scaffolding. On top of being a cheaper option, rope access is also more efficient, safer and faster. While scaffolding can take days to erect (depending on the site size), rope access systems can be set up in a very short space of time. We are not limited to access points like scaffolding is and overall, rope access provides a far more flexible option that can be tailored to specific tasks.
